How to Navigate FOMC
The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) decisions and monetary policy statements are among the most closely watched events in global financial markets.
Since Federal Reserve policy has a direct impact on U.S. Dollar yields and global liquidity, these announcements often lead to rapid price movements, increased spreads, and heightened volatility across foreign exchange pairs.
Understanding how the FOMC operates and how to manage risk around its releases gives traders a clearer, more rational approach to fundamental events, rather than relying on emotion.
Understanding the Policy Framework
The FOMC meets eight times a year to set the target federal funds rate (interest rates) and communicate its monetary policy outlook. Market participants focus primarily on three key components:
-
The Policy Statement: It announces any adjustments to the benchmark interest rate and summarises economic conditions.
-
The Press Conference: Led by the Fed Chair 30 minutes later, providing context on rate path projections, inflation trends, and labour market dynamics.
-
Summary of Economic Projections (SEP) & Dot Plot: Published quarterly, showing individual committee members’ rate forecasts for the coming years.
Looking Beyond the Interest Rate Headline
Many retail traders make the mistake of focusing solely on whether the Fed raises, cuts, or holds interest rates.
However, headline figures are usually already priced into the market by institutional participants well before the announcement. The real driver of sustained market direction is the Monetary Policy Statement.
How FOMC Decisions Affect US Stocks:
-
Lower Interest Rates: When borrowing costs decrease, they generally stimulate economic activity and increase stock prices.
-
Higher Interest Rates: When borrowing costs rise, economic growth tends to slow, which can negatively impact stock prices.
-
Market Sentiment: Stock indices often fluctuate significantly depending on whether the Federal Reserve has an optimistic or cautious outlook on future growth.
General Risk Awareness
Major economic releases inherently present unpredictable market conditions. Traders should keep fundamental risk principles in mind when operating around these news events:
-
Extreme Volatility: Sudden price spikes can occur in both directions within seconds of a release.
-
Spread Expansion: Brokers often widen bid-ask spreads significantly during news events due to shifting liquidity, which can impact execution prices.
